Fascinating Flax History
Yesterday Waianiwa School drove to Riverton by bus to learn about flax milling, how to work the machines and how to make string from the flax fibre. We also visited the Enviro South Centre to learn about food.
We learnt about how the different foods we eat grow from seeds, fruit, roots, flower, fungi, leaves, grains and nuts. Mrs Guyton showed us how to make flour from wheat and bake it into bread, how to make cheese and butter from milk. Room 2 and 3 children learnt that eggs came from hens.
Mr Guyton showed us how to make marshmallow seed balls from clay and seeds. The clay balls dry out in 2 days and can be planted in your garden anywhere. If you put the seeds in clay balls, birds can't eat them. We made lots of clay balls so that we could growing marshmallow plants and then making marshmallows by cutting the roots, boiling them and adding sugar.
